Suicide Club (Japan, 2001)

54 high school girls throw themselves in front of a subway train. This appears to be only the beginning of a string of suicides around the country. Does the new all-girl group Desert have anything to do with it? Detective Kuroda tries to find the answer, which isn't as simple as one could hope.

Suicide Club (a.k.a. Suicide Circle) is an interesting piece of Japanese film, and in some ways connected to their historical glorification of suicide. The effects varies from cheesy to decent, but the overall plot is what really matters in this film. Teenagers are killing themselves left and right, and the cops are suspecting it to be a fad. Suicide. A fad. Pretty controversial stuff. Ryo Ishibashi (Audition) plays one of the detectives who're trying to solve this mystery, and I always seem to enjoy his performances. It also has one of the most powerful openings I've seen in a long, long time.

Genre: Crime/Drama/Horror
